Jam Detection on a Conveyor with Only AC Power
Challenge
Packages or other items that move down a conveyor belt can cause delays or damage if a jam occurs. Excellent sensors are available to help indicate jams so that they can be quickly and easily resolved before a major pileup or overflow occurs. Unfortunately, however, the conveyor in this situation happens to use incompatible AC power.
Solution
Users can install a DC-powered sensor, such as the reliable Banner Q5X Jam Detection model, in an area where items tend to get caught or stuck, such as where there is a transition to an induction conveyor, or a corner, incline, or curve in the conveyor pathway. This sensor can then be configured to trigger an alarm, tower light, so that workers receive immediate notification to dislodge the items, keep them moving smoothly through the production process, and prevent downtime from product overflow. Adding a compact SPS30 AC/DC In-Line Power Converter to the Q5X makes the necessary voltage conversion so that the sensor can be properly integrated into the AC-powered automation system.
