Clear Material Loop Control
Challenge
Before packages of bottled water or juice are packaged with the shrink wrapper, the material is monitored to ensure proper feed supply. The machine needs to maintain a certain amount of slack on the shrink wrap material before going through the oven, otherwise the material becomes too thin or wrinkled when packaged.
A reliable sensor that can detect clear materials is needed to measure the loop to ensure there is adequate material feed before going through the oven. The sensor needs to communicate to a controller in order to increase or decrease the speed of the machine pulling the material for overall tension control.
Solution
Banner’s T30UX ultrasonic sensor is the perfect sensor for detecting clear material for loop control because it uses sound rather than light, which makes it more accurate and cost-effective for this specific application. Although the material is clear, it presents a solid surface for an ultrasonic sensor to bounce a sound wave.
The T30UX has a more accurate transducer, a smaller dead zone and minimum distance compared to other sensors that can be used for clear material detection. With a working range of 100 mm to 3 m, operators can easily fit this compact, right angle barrel sensor where it works best on the line.
The T30UX ultrasonic sensor uses an analog output to communicate to the controller so the speed of the machine can be changed if slag is out of this range. In areas that experience temperature variation, the T30UX has built-in temperature compensation to adjust to the environment and deliver consistent distance measurement for the analog output, which reduces ambient temperature error by 90%. The T30UX also has a remote TEACH mode for security, convenience and simple configuration.
