Challenge
In today’s E-commerce world of order fulfillment, major shipping companies are moving forward with size and weight-based pricing, also known as dimensional pricing. Dimensions of parcels are needed for pricing information, and are needed to determine storage and shipping requirements.
Space management is one of the key focuses of a warehouse management system, so package dimension information helps ensure there is no wasted space in order to maximize storage capacity.
Solution
Banner’s EZ-ARRAY measuring light curtains detect items as small as 5 mm wide with an edge resolution of 2.5 mm, and have high excess gain for detecting opaque objects. These features allow for reliable detection and measurement of packages that pass through the light curtains.
The total number of beams blocked for each pair indicates the size, which is sent to a sorter as an analog signal. A PLC then diverts each carton to the appropriate storage location.
The EZ-ARRAY light screens are rugged and cost-effective for carton dimensioning. The light screens are easy to install and have a simple setup with remote TEACH programming. The controller functionality is built into the receiver, so basic setup requires no controller, software or PC.
